Join Christina for a Batch Watch Thursday evening at Trothmoot 2019 beginning at sunset (exact location TBD). Bats are everywhere and Fort Flagler is no exception. These fast flying insectivores can be hard to see but with the help of bat detectors that amplify bat feeding calls we’ll be able to see and hear our local bats come out to eat. There will be real bat specimens and a Q&A session.

Many of us have been using runes for divination over
the years, yet most of us do simple pulls and layouts.  Have you ever
considered casting them like lots?  We will discuss a method to develop a
system of casting runes that will work for you.  By the end, you should have
the confidence needed to take this next step.

Cascadia Freehold will put on a short play, titled
Loki's Wager With The Dwarves, dramatizing the story from Gylfaginning
wherein Loki, having gotten himself into quite a fix by cutting off Sif's
golden hair, pits two famous families of dwarven smiths against one another
to see whose gifts to the gods will win greatest praise! What's at stake?
Why, only Loki's head, of course!

This workshop will focus on the Thrymskvida (aka, How Thor Got His Hammer Back). Myth embodiment is a depth psychology tool that has been used in healing families and communities, but it can also be a powerful tool for gaining a deeper insight into myths. After all, what are myths but stories about the dynamics of the families of the Gods? Through reenacting this myth, we will get an experiential view of the relationships between the different Powers That Be in Norse mythology. This activity is specifically *not* meant to be scripted, so as to allow space for as many opinions, point of views, and nuances as possible. No acting experience is needed--just a willingness to give your input and opinions and to act silly if the part calls for it. (Note: The part will probably call for it.)

n Viga-Glúm’s Saga, one of the Icelandic family sagas, young Glúm
travels to his kin in Norway.  He obtains three family heirlooms (a cloak, a
spear, and a sword), the apparent blessings of his family spirits, and the
patronage of Odin. Upon his return to Iceland, he wrests power from his
neighboring relatives, who have oppressed his side of the family, and who are
connected to the rival cult of Frey.  Glúm eventually rises to the status of
local leader though his canny use of feud, violence, trickery and the law.
His ascendancy, however, proves unstable, and in his later years, he is
forced out of the district. What interpretation should we give this saga, and
what are its implications for our understanding of heathen metaphysics and
the nature of Odinic chieftaincy?

A round table discussion for atheists, doubters, skeptics, cynics and agnostics. It is said that belief is not required for the practice of Heathenry. Not everyone believes, or wants to believe in the gods and other spiritual entities customarily honored in modern Heathen observances. Some people have lots of questions or can't decide on a regular practice or devotional path. Some are so solitary or unique in their practice that meaningful group ritual is nearly impossible. Others don't care at all about any of the above, but just like to hang out with other Heathens. There's room for all of us. Let's sit down and talk about the common interests and contrasting perspectives we experience.

The Troth's In-Reach Heathen Prison program answers correspondence from prisoners and works with chaplains to provide support for inclusive Heathenry within prisons, mostly in the US. White supremacists have long used Heathen religion as a recruiting and organizing tool within US prisons, and InReach works to counter that with academically rigorous alternatives and support. Come learn a bit about the terrain, the history of the program and how you might help as a volunteer. Panelists to include program founder Rob Schreiwer, program coordinator Jo Hunding and Rory Bowman, chaplain liaison.

A blot to honor Thor.  The blot will be restricted to Thor only, no other
deities.     There will be an invocation to Thor, and an original song the
group will sing to further the invocation. Then the horn will be passed and
everyone will have a chance to make a quick toast to Thor.

Last year I presented a visioning session at Trothmoot to discuss the history of our organization and ask the membership where they would like us to put our priorities going forward. That session has done much to influence the Rede in the past year. I would like to continue the conversation, talking about what has and has not been accomplished and see where we want to go next, especially as we transition to a new Steer.
